7. Managing maps, visualisations, news and resources

7.1 The Map

The map present on the page explore global attitudes would need to be edited and managed through Flourish

7.1.1 Understanding the DataSheet behind the map

When accessing the map from flourish, you can quickly see that there are several sheets of information to be displayed on the file. There is a data sheet that contains all the information needed for the visualisations we see when clicking on a specific country in the map.

As you can imagine, there are elements that are present in several countries, we can see how this information correlates to the preview by seeing the data sheet and noticing that for each element, there are several entries as rows, each one for each country the element is present at.

7.1.2 Editing Slide Information

Editing this data is quite sensitive as flourish does not keep track of the changes if you mistakenly change something that did not intend to. We recommend asking for support or let a colleague that has received training guide you through it.

7.2 Visualisations – Slides and Stories

In order to Access and Manage any Visualisation on Flourish, you must contact the person within your team or department who has knowledge on Flourish and they can guide you towards creating or managing content there.

7.3 News

Whether News or Resources, Sustainability uses these post types to house its changing and evolving content. News are usually more related to an external news article, so you can start imagining its structure in Gutenberg.

7.3.1 Creating a Post

Using the WordPress Administrator Panel, navigate to the News list, look on the top of the list Add New, this will trigger Gutenberg where you can title your article and fill with content.

7.3.2 Categorizing a Post

Within Gutenberg, go to the right part of the screen, look for the Settings Sidebar (page/post) and start going down in the slots until you see Categories, open it and you can select an already created category or add a new one of your choice.

7.3.3 Adding an Image and Description

The image that will display on the archive page when browsing all the News would be the featured image of the article. Within the Settings Sidebar (page/post) go to featured image and either upload the correspondent image or choose it from the media library.

In order to add a description, in the same Settings Sidebar (page/post), look for excerpt or description. This piece of text will be the summary displaying on the archive page.

7.3.4 Linking to external Articles

It’s very common that if the article is from an external source, as soon as you click on the article you will be redirected. We create this link with the permalink option from the Settings Sidebar (page/post). When you find it, just paste or type the URL of the external source. You can also select open in a new tab if desired.

7.4 Resources

The Process for Resources is very similar if not the same. The only difference is that Resources might not be external on most cases as like the News articles.

7.4.1 Creating a new Resource

The process of creating a new Resource is the same as with the news, but this time, in WordPress Administrator Panel, go to Resources, and then to Add New. Fill your Resource with a title and a brief description if in fact it is external. If not external, take your time to describe it and add any important piece of content and media. Format it until you are satisfied.

7.4.2 Adding Description and Cover Image

This step of the process is exactly the same. You can navigate to the Settings Sidebar (page/post) and from here, you can add your description, cover or featured image for the archive page and also Categorise the Resource.

As we have seen, there is the possibility of a Resource being external and therefore we must redirect the traffic from Sustainability towards the external source of the resource. To do so, go to the Settings Sidebar (page/post) and go to permalink. In here you can safely type or paste the destination URL of the Resource. Do not forget to decide if the traffic must be redirected to open the resource in a new tab or close sustainability and lead them to the resource on the same tab.
